Strategy for Facing a Hurtful World

(The article title has been updated on December 1, 2009). I came across an article by someone who wrote about the ultimate goal of life. Basically the essence of that article is this: Do not feel pain or happy towards anything, give up the feelings and soon one will reach a godly state. Sometimes I do not understand what will happen after reaching this godly state? If that is godly state, then what is the point of many beautiful things like an innocent child's smile, beautiful nature, and wonderful stars? Many people customize God according to their specifications.

What if God is someone who has feelings and emotions? What if God created this world for a wonderful purpose, but humans messed it up with their evil desires and selfish motives? What if God is still pursuing mankind and trying to establish His Kingdom on this earth? What if everyone of us has a part to accomplish that purpose? God will not burden us more than we can bear. We cannot just try to escape pain and joy in this world, and say it is being godly. That is being a coward!

Recently, I went to a postal office to ship a package to Canada. The woman, who was helping me with my transaction, was in her mid-fifties, I guess. She made an obvious error about my package. I brought that to her notice indirectly. She replied rudely “I have been working here for more than 30 years. I am not stupid”. My conversation with her was not fruitful in fixing the error. I shipped the package assuming that she was correct.

Almost a month passed by. My package was returned because of the error she made. For a moment, I was really angry. I thought why should I be going through unnecessary hassle because of her. My immediate reaction from my human reasoning was that of teaching her a lesson and exposing her mistake to the manager. I waited. I didn't want to react immediately especially when the reaction was not a positive one. Who knows what issues she was going through on that day with her colleagues or her family members? I prayed. I asked God what He wanted me to do with her. I got a confirmation not to do anything right then.

Few days went by and I had to go to the same postal office and the same woman was there at the counter. After my transaction was completed, I told her in a low voice about the problem that I had to go through because of her mistake. She didn't apologize to me. She nodded with a brief reply “It has never happened in my career so far”. I thought “God, please forgive her” and moved on. The fact that she was working with that postal office for more than 30 years showed that she must be a good employee, though she made some mistakes or she must be having a bad day.

Many famous writers and psychologists tell us to vent out our feelings. But things will just get worse if we always follow our feelings. Instead of 'venting out' our feelings, we can conquer them with mercy, understanding and forgiveness. 'Venting out' will not help in the long-run.

It is like this. We have been forgiven by God many times, for the mistakes that we made. In the same way, we have to forgive others. That makes God smile. Then all kinds of miracles can happen. As Jesus said, when we have that love in our hearts, we can even move mountains. It is not easy to have that kind of love, especially in this world of hurt and pain. But it is not difficult if we take God's help.

Forgiveness
written by Alan Steinle , October 22, 2009
I have sometimes seen my ability to forgive as a "secret weapon," although I don't really like to use the word "weapon" and it should not be a secret. Forgiveness protects me from a negative downward spiral of self-pity. It keeps me from condemning others and condemning myself. I have found forgiveness to be a continual process and attitude, not a single act. Forgiveness is implied in the greatest commandment, to love God and others. Forgiveness purifies the world. I cannot recommend it enough.

I used the word "weapon" because to give an idea that forgiveness and mercy are not passive forces, but active ones. I too don't think the act of forgiveness should be a secret weapon, because doing so can harm us and do good to nobody. Sometimes, it is necessary to keep it a secret when we are not sure of how to react in a situation. I read somewhere that forgiveness is a selfish act too. Because, we forgive so that we feel better about it. However, it should not be that way always.

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, forgiveness and mercy purify the world.

Nuren, as usual you wrote a very good article.
May be we atheists can forgive god for what he has done to this world.
Kingdom of god? Why is he waiting?? Establish already!
May be the world should know about us..that..atheists and theists could be very good friends..

I do really believe that forgiveness and mercy are really two great revolutionary concepts.

Yes buddy. It is a very good article. I knew smilies/smiley.gif
I think the Kingdom of God has already taken its seeds with the arrival of Jesus. It is already here NOW and also in us. When we do good things with pure hearts as Jesus taught, the Kingdom of God is manifested here. But a time is coming that the Kingdom will be fully manifested. That could be with the second coming of Christ.

Why God is waiting to establish the Kingdom of God? I think it is because He is waiting for some bad people to repent. Not everyone who is doing bad are REALLY bad, but they do out of their ignorance. This is explained by Jesus in parables. Do a quick search on Matthew 13:24-30 and Matthew 13:36-43.

Then, what about pain and suffering? I think the physical death that people experience is not the end. All the good people will be in the Kingdom of God. You may be there too, though you say you are an atheist smilies/smiley.gif

But the entrance to the Kingdom is only through Christ smilies/smiley.gif There is one thing required on our part: genuine repentance and accepting Him as our Lord.
