The Magical Power of Solitude

Definition of Solitude: 'The state or quality of being alone or remote from others.'

There are some incidents that increased fear in my life; such as the passing away of my mother. I received good love and support from my family and close friends during those times, but it was still scary. There was a fear of facing life.

Sometimes, I used to wake up in the middle of the night because of that fear and stress. Friends who are good-hearted can empathize with us in such situations. But the help you may receive from them in the form of good words is limited sometimes.

When I had any sort of fear, I used to walk alone or spend time alone watching sky and stars. When I watch all these things, surely I knew that these things did not come out of nothing. Someone is behind all these things.

Most of us try to reason and accept everything in the way we wanted to believe. We already make up our mind before we experience things. To combat fear or any major problem, we need to see things in the spiritual realm and not in the natural realm. If we observe the lives of great people, they all have this in common; that they spend time regularly in solitude renewing their minds and strengths and they do not just think in the natural realm.

How can spending time in solitude help us?
Spending time in solitude can help us listen to our deepest inner voice. This inner voice will comfort us. It will help us. It will guide us.

How to spend time in solitude?
Do not put on any music. Do not worry about taking phone calls. Do not read anything. About 45 minutes is good enough for a day. Just have faith that help is waiting for you. And you will get all the guidance and comfort you need - from within yourself.

It also depends on who you submit yourself to when you are spending time in solitude. Some people strengthen their ego and think only in terms of power and worldly terms. Some people become humbled before the Supreme and remind themselves of both His power and compassion. Here I am talking about the later one.

Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world - 1 John 4:4

Magical Power of Solitude
written by a guest , March 28, 2009
Very good article Nuren. Most people look for comfort outside. They try to spend more time with friends and people they know. But their troubles remain when they return home. There are 3 things I can think of which might help in times of trouble:
1. Take action to eliminate or minimize troubling situation.
2. Reflect on inner self - i.e. solitude
3. Try to help others in their areas of need, and we find our troubles becoming smaller !!
Great article & topic... Keep it up Nuren !!

With Love,

Hello Kannan bhai,
Thanks for sharing your comments. Yes, I completely agree with you.

For the second point you suggested, I think we also can focus on our relationship with God while spending time in solitude.

Best wishes,
Nuren

Emerson's thoughts on solitude
written by a guest , April 14, 2009
"It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."
--Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Self-Reliance"

I think what Emerson means is that it is hard to be true to ourselves when we are pushed and pulled by the influences of those around us. We don't want to disappoint others, and we are afraid of their disapproval. But when we accept the unconditional love and acceptance of God, the opinions of other people become less important, and we are able to be more authentic.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I agree with you. Solitude is for re-energizing and aligning our spirit so that we listen better to God.

One should not delude himself in solitude. Nice to see your comment on my site whether it is the Alan I know or a different Alan smilies/smiley.gif
